Methergine is given after miscarriage to help slow down and stop bleeding. It can also help expel blood clots and remains of the miscarriage. Some people who take it do say they have more painful cramps, but I did not experience this. It can give you bad headaches too, ask your doctor for a pain medicine if you need one.

Methergine is a drug that is mainly used to cause a contraction in uterus' muscle. Unlike Oxytocin, which has a relaxation period after contraction, Methergine produces constant contraction. As a result, cramping and bowel discomfort may be experienced. On the other hand, Methergine helps to reduce the bleeding and transporting the remaining blood clots in your uterus.

I believe it depends on how far along you are in my experience. The first time i took it was after my miscarriage was at 6 weeks, which is pretty early. The second time i took it was at 11 weeks, and i can tell you the pain was so much more. I also bleed longer the second time.
