What should I expect from a cesarean section recovery?

I know I will be having a c-section and I want to be prepared.

You'll notice a weakening of the abdominal muscles since they have been cut during surgery. Breast feeding can speed up recovery time. Things like sitting up or laughing can cause a mild pulling pain in your abdomen. It is important to remember that as far out as six months from surgery you must be careful because your muscles are weak.

You will have generalized pain in the abdominal area. Also, you will be limited in the amount of activity you can do right after it. You won't be able to do any heavy lifting.

The day after your c-section you should be able to get up and take a shower. Your activity should increase daily. You will have limits on the amount of weight you can lift (around 10 pounds) for 4-6 weeks. You will have staples or sutures across your lower abdomen which will be taken out in about 6 weeks.

Most of all, just be prepared to be sore and to take it easy. The recovery time is different for everyone, some women take a couple weeks, some a couple months. Don't expect to be able to jump back into your routine right away, just take it easy.

You will need to be in bed for a while, and be prepared to feed the baby using a pillow. Also, have antibacterial ointment and gauze bandages to keep away infection.

I had two C sections. Recovery is not bad. You will probably feel numb at the site for a long time. You will need to not lift more than 10lbs. and will need more rest than a regular delivery but it is not as terrible as people say it is.
