This is a more frustrating kind of algae that thrives on bright light, therefore, eliminating the light for several days will help get rid of it. Change the water and clean everything thoroughly. To help fight algae in the aquarium keeping algae eating fish and live plants are recommended. Do not overfeed the fish and reduce lighting.

If your tank is experiencing an increase of algea you have a couple options. You can either change its water and clean the tank completely or you can buy more algea eaters and hope that nature takes its course the way you want it to.

Begin by cutting back on feeding of your fish. Do not clean the inside of your filter. Be sure to change the tank water regularly by 25%. Also vacuum your gravel at least every two weeks or so.

Remove it and clean rocks and vacuum bottom of your aquarium. You can help prevent this by doing a weekly 10% water change and reduce lighting, among other things.

Algae doesn't harm the fish and is simply an annoyance for you. The best solution is adding an algae-eating fish such as a plecostomus.

If your tank is by a window, the sunlight will create algae blooms. Also you might shorten the time on your aquarium light, that will prevent them also. Fish stores do sell chemicals to "kill" the algea bloom. If you buy the chemicals watch your natural and unnatural lighting to prevent the blooms from coming back.

You could go to the pet store and purchase an algae eater or a pleco since they both eat algae. It is also possible that black mollies will help eat the algae. There are chemicals you can add to the water, but those fish would be the most natural way to deal with the problem.

Well if there a bloom, you need to get rid of it. You should put some chlorine in the aquarium to get rid of the bacteria.

Lower the light levels, lessen the amount of nutrients introduced to the aquarium. You can use snails or a razor blade to assist in cleaning the algae.
