What should I do about an abscess in a feral cat?

It looks really bad.

Abcesses can be life threatening. Take it to a veterinarian for treatment with antibiotics. He may do the work for free or a reduced fee if the cat's a stray.

Aside from leaving the cat to get better on its own, the best plan is probably to trap it and take it to a vet. Many vets and animal shelters offer low-cost care for just this sort of situation. While you're at it, you might want to get the animal neutered as well.

because it is a feral cat, there is a good chance that it has more wrong with it then that one abscess. your best bet is to take it to a humane society where they will do what is needed to be done.

Problem is, if you take it to a shelter they may put it down. Many shelters take a dim view of feral cats. Best bet is to trap it and get it to a vet, preferably one with experience treating ferals...  add a comment

You can't always trap them, and in a colony you will probably also have trouble keeping the other cats at bay while you try to administer antibiotics in wet food. It's amazing how much wet food all those cats can devour before they stop! What I have found works isake150g.psulefoxicili

Cont'd What works is to open a cap of amoxicillin and sprinkle it on the cat's dry food. The other cats won't be attracted to it as long as they have their own, and the target cat probably will eat it without noticing.  add a comment

If you can catch it take it to a vet or a no kill shelter. If not homeopathic remedies work really well on animals, just put a few pellits in some canned food. Depending on the cause of the abscess, if its a tooth pyrogenium works well, a puncture wound use ledum.

You can't treat the abscess yourself. You will have to trap the cat and take it to a vet. The vet will clean the abscess and provide antibiotics.
