Question by  Janarthanam (53)

What qualifications should I expect in a childcare provider?

I am putting my child into care for the first time when I go back to work and I don't know what to ask about or what to look for.

Choose a state-licensed provider, whether day care center or home child care. State standards guarantee the safety of the site, adequate staffing levels, and minimum qualifications of the staff. Visit care providers nearby, looking for low staff:child ratio, warmth, educational programs, playground equipment, and regulations suiting your schedule and budget.

Get references, and do a criminal background check. Ask about their routine, food your child will be feed, hours, view the other children in the daycare and make sure they have an updated CPR/First Aid.

Depending on where you live, check for state certification, then ask about what meals are provided and ask for sample menus (or how they go about bottle feeding) Then ask for a tour of the facility, always go with your gut and if anything makes you nervous, move on.

Make sure the daycare and the workers have the proper licenses. Also try to find other parents who have send their children there before. Ask them how their children were taken care of and if they would recommend the place to you.
