What options do I have for automatic volume control on my new TV?

Well what sort of television is it? If it's a modern flat screen then you have many options. You can run your audio through speakers.

My tv allows me to change the volume through my remote control or on the tv itself. I can change the volume up and down and also mute the sound.

In fact there two many I can control volume with remote control and with buttons attached on monitor. I can adjust volume in setting volume and I can choose option of automatic volume control. After selecting this option volume is controlled automatically according to various channel. This is one time process .
