Acid rain destroys the waxy layer on leaves, hinders or prevents photosynthesis and so defoliates trees. It can affect the acidity of the ground water, and also ponds and streams, and kill life in them. Buildings and structures are more quickly eroded by acid rain.

Pollution to ground water will kill micro organisms, larva and amphibians that support the food chain. Aquatic plants die off and cause low oxygen levels in the water. Terrestrial plants may die and increase erosion causing further water pollution. Increased corrosion of man-made products will increase the leachate of heavy metals and other toxic substances.

Acid rain damages water sources, such as ponds and lakes. The acidity changes the pH level of the water and makes it inhabitable to wildlife. Acid rain also damages plants on land, as well. The acid causes severe damage to the cellular structure, making trees and shrubbery die out eventually.

Aquatic life: some fish and insects are unable to reproduce in acidic lakes. Also, mercury and becomes available to fish and other animals when water is acid. Forests: acid rain reduces nutrients available to trees and other plants. Also: marble and limestone buildings and monuments are eroded by acid rain.

Acid rain causes extreme damage to soft plant tissue such as leaves. Building material can also be affected and can eventually become worn out from the acid. Lakes and other water bodies can take decades to fully recover.
