Many outside activities are available for tourists. If you enjoy fishing, swimming, or surfing, you are at the right place. The Ocracoke lighthouse is on the island's southern side, and many unique stores provide shopping. Everything from camping to birdwatching is here, and Blackbeard, the pirate, reportedly visited here.

Visit on of the historic lighthouses, Chicamacomico Lifesaving Historic Site, the Civil War trail, Fort Riley National Historic Site, the Freedman's Colony, many museums and nature trails.
