It's hard to go wrong, really. I would avoid the big cities and military towns. Otherwise, the state is largely suburban and rural. I've found the Moore/Lee county area comfortable.

North Carolina has many places to settle down. An up and coming area would be Denver NC, it is located within a decent driving distance to Charlotte, beach and mountains.

Ashville, NC is a very people friendly town located right next to Tennessee. Ashville has great schools, shops, parks, and all around anything for a family. With the market down, you could find a nice place in Ashville for a fair price.

It depends on what you are looking for. Raleigh has a great Arts center with museums and several theaters. But it has a "big city" feel. Greenville however is an ever growing community that has easy access to both the beach and the cultural hub that is Raleigh. So decide if you want a small town or a big city.
