I would ask for 10 settings - the most people you'll usually have at a dinner (a family gathering, etc) is probably 8. This way you'll have enough for a typical dinner, but if you accidentally break a piece you'll still have 8 full settings with the extras you've requested!

If you enjoy entertaining, a good starting number to register for is twelve. Otherwise, six or eight settings will suffice.
