The song is about a soldier that has gone off to war and has come home so mentally and emotionally scarred that he has to move away from his family and friends to start life over. The song is told from the perspective of the soldier's brother, who misses him.

According to the lyricist (Bernie Taupin), the song is not based on any personal experience, but was written about a Vietnam vet who was blinded in the war and returns home only to find he no longer fits in. Therefore, he flees to Spain because he can't return to the life he had before the war.
