Voluntary departure allows an individual to leave the country at his/her expense within a time frame specified by immigration authorities. Instead of being deported, the individual can leave on his/her own. Voluntary departure does not bar re-admission in the future, as does deportation (10 years).

It is when an individual rather than confront someone else in an altercation decides to leave the prescence or the setting where the potential confrontation would occur.
