The federal minimum wage is $7.25, although some states have a minimum wage that is higher. Waitresses are paid a portion of that amount as a base and then is expected that the rest of the amount will be made up in tips. An individual might agree to waitress for tips, which is common in family businesses.

The wage that I've always known waitresses to get is $3.50 and than they can receive there tips as well. But at the end of the year you have to report your wages that you make and report half of your tips that you receive throughout the year or half of the tips that you received during your employment.

The minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Tips count toward the minimum wage but it is illegal to work only for tips, as Federal law requires a $2.13 base pay.

Most states do not allow waiters and waitresses to work ONLY for tips. However, the minimum wage for servers is $2.14 in most states (higher in some), on the idea that they will earn tips to bring them over the minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
