I do not understand why people say this when they are mediating.

Aum is like saying "amen", it indicates a special state that you are in, a prayer state of mind. Aum and Amen are thought to be linked linguistically and when people say A----men their whole bodies hum in the same way.

"Om" is a mystical and sacred syllable. Used as beginning and end of the Vedas in Hindu religions. In Sanskrit literally means "to sound out loudly"
