Halloween originated with the Gaelic celebration of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season. The masks and costumes were supposed to scare or appease evil spirits that night.

In the Middle Ages, people believed that spirits were released from the underworld to walk the earth on All Hallow's Eve (Hallow'een). The spirits could stay until All Saints' Day (November 1), and while here, they could take the living back with them. So, people wore costumes to disguise themselves.

Halloween has two different roots: Samhain, the Celtic harvest festival, and All Saints (also called All Hallows; Halloween is All Hallows Eve), a Christian holiday honoring all the saints.

Halloween means "hallow" or "holy eve." It is the eve of All Saints Day and some believe that "spirits" come back to earth on that evening.
