Although the literacy rate in America is listed in most places as somewhere between 95-98%, this number can be misleading. Those who work in education, especially in reading and writing classes at the high school or even college level, often find low literacy even in fairly advanced classes.

In 2006, 65% of America could read and write. The remaining percentage was said to never have picked up another book without leaving school, which results in illiteracy.
