There are acurally two answers. Ian Douglas wrote and Inheritance Trilogy which are military science fiction books. They focus on the United States Marine Corps of the future. Christopher Paolini also wrote an Inheritance Trilogy which is fantasy about dragons.

This is either the fantasy novels by Christopher Paolini or a series of military science fiction books by Ian Douglas focusing on the US Marine Corps. Paolini's books feature a teen named Eragon and his dragon Saphira, as Eragon becomes one of the last Dragon Riders. Douglas features the 1st Marine Expeditonary Force fighting the Xul to save Earth.
