In the 1920s, France was considering tearing down the Eiffel Tower. The invention of radio created a need for radio transmitting stations to be placed high up. The placement of several radio antennas on the Tower prevented its demolition. An estimated 367 have committed suicide jumping from the Eiffel Tower.
