The alveoli is considered the main functional unit of the lungs. Alveoli is made up of a single layer of epithelial tissue, which allows for rapid air exchange. It is within the alveoli that oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.

They are like little pockets that will trap oxygen in them when you breath. The oxygen is then absorbed from there into the blood stream over a short amount of time.
