Carbohydrates are your body's main fuel source. Your body will burn carbohydrates before any other fuel source. Carbohydrates are broken down into sugar (glucose) and then shuttled by blood to muscles and various organs such as the brain. In excess, they can fatten you up, but that's due to an excess of calories, not carbohydrates themselves.

Carbohydrates are one of your body's main sources of energy, especially for your brain. Carbs are your muscle's main source of energy during exercise. Carbohydrates only fatten you up when they are eaten in excess. This occurs because it causes your blood sugar to spike which tells your body to begin storing excess energy as fat.
