Cycle day one is the first day of bright red blood. If you have some spotting or brownish discharge just before your cycle starts, wait until flow to start counting.

The first day of your period is the first day you start bleeding. That is the date you would use to calculate your 28 day cycle.

For calculation and medical purposes the day you start bleeding )ie the day your period starts) is the first day of your periods. This is useful in calculating when you approximately ovulate, your next period or your expected date of delivery if you get pregnant.

According to most reproductive specialist the first day of your period is the first day in which you have full flow prior to five o'clock in the afternoon. If your full flow is not reached till after five then your first day would be the next day.
