Pine and firs are both in the same conifir family. Fir trees have softer, single needles and pines come in clusters of two to six. Pine cones grow on branches of the pine tree whereas fir tree cones grow on uppermost branches. Pines can be trees or shrubs and firs are regarded as trees only.

Fir and Pine trees are both considered conifers - a conifer being a cone bearing tree. Fir trees have needles that grow along the branches, pine needles grow in bunches.

The difference in conifers is the leaf. Each conifer will grow a different style of leaf or needle. So will keep their color year round, while others will change color in the fall and winter.

Conifer just means cone bearing trees, of which fir and pine are both members of. If you're concerned purely for aesthetics, then their looks should really be the only thing to worry about. Different species of fir and pine grow to different sizes, but they have very similar requirements.

It may be helpful to you to seek advice from a master gardener or a lanscaper. A professional lanscaper can tell you what would thrive in your yard and look the best year round. They can select trees based on your needs. To quickly answer your question, a pine has needles while a conifer will have cones.
