The American Football Conference (AFC) stems from the teams from the original American Football League, which was a rival league to the NFL. When the two leagues merged, after the second Super Bowl, as the first two were AFL versus NFL championship games, the league became the NFL and the AFL teams became the AFC and the NFL teams NFC.

The AFC (American Football Conference) and NFC (National Football Conference) are both conferences that make up the NFL. They were originally two completely separate leagues.

While they were originally different leagues, now they are just the 2 conferences that make up the NFL. Unlike the AL and NL in MLB, they don't have rule differences.
