What is the difference between cross-stitching and embroidery?

Or is one a way to do the other?

Embroidery is more closely put together than cross stitching, but cross stitching is considered a type of embroidery. It's like a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't a square. Embroidery is done usually with an embroidery machine (like a sewing machine), cross stitch is done by hand.

Cross stitch is usually done on cross-stitch fabric, and entirely consists of cross stitches in a square-based pattern. Embroidery is done on any fabric and is free-form.
