What is the difference between char-broiling and grilling?

While they can both be performed in a standard grill, char-broiling refers to placing the meat closer to the coals in order to take on a slightly charred effect. It's the blackened appearance and the smoky taste that refers to char-broiling, while grilling refers to any use of a grill.

Basically these two process are very similar. However broiling is done in an oven under a broiler whereas grilling is done on a grill or on a grill pan. Both will cook the meat pretty similarly but broiling won't create the nice grill marks you get from grilling.
