A CD-R may have data recorded on it a single time. After that, you may only view the data that you have recorded, and may not edit it further. A CD-RW may have data recorded on it multiple times, as well as, have data removed from it. So, basically, a CD-RW functions similar to a flash drive.

A cd-r is a cd which allows you to save data such as photos, music or documents. Data can be added multiple times until the memory on the cd has been used. A cd-rw is a cd which you can record the same types of data on, but you can also erase data and replace it.

Cd-r means Cd "Readable". That means if you put this type of Cd in a Cd drive it can only read from it. Cd-rw means Cd "Readable Writable". This means that if you put this Cd into a Cd drive it can read and write date to and from the disc

A cd-rw can be recorded on and wiped clean and then re-recorded on as many times as you like, or more files can be added - much as you might do with a flash drive. A CD-R can only be recorded on once even if you only use a tiny fraction of the space.

Cd-R's are unable to be re-written. You can re-write Cd-rw's. Once the info is burned onto a Cd-R you can no longer add more information or change it. With a CD-R you can re-write information over the top of the old.
