An equinox occurs in the spring and the fall, and is when the sun is closest to the equator. Day and night hours are roughly equal on these days. A solstice occurs in the summer and winter, when the sun is closest to the poles. On these days, the length of day and night hours are very unequal.

Daytime is different amounts of time at different times of the year, as the Earth orbits the sun. An equinox is the day when day and night are of equal length. A solstice is the day when it is at either extreme--the shortest amount of daylight and the longest.
