Ritalin is a legitimate treatment ADD, but this condition (ADD) is very often over diagnosed by doctors. Many children seem overactive and unable to concentrate because they do not get enough exercise. Ritalin calms them, but so would more sports.

There are many parents and professionals that have researched this drug and the constant debate is about how addictive the drug can be. It is a powerful drug that is often used to treat ADD or ADHD in children and parents do notice a significant change. I would want at least two more opinions and talk to teachers before administering.

Ritalin is in class of drugs called amphetamines. While Ritalin can be effective in the treatment of ADD/ADHD, in some children, it can cause dependence, particularly in older children.

Ritalin was designed to increase focus and calm down children who are hyperactive. The criticism of the medication is that it does this job too well. Children on the medicine are often described as passive or even zombie-like in that their reactions are slowed and they seem disinterested. If you have concerns ask your doctor about alternatives.
