The biggest muscle in the body is called gluteus maximus. It is the superficial muscle of the buttock. It originates in the ilium behind posterior gluteal line, posterior surface of the sacrum, and sacrotuberous ligament. The action of this muscle is extends the thigh especially from the flexed position as in climbing stairs and rising from a sitting position.
