If you are an absolute novice, the best way to pick stocks is by getting help from a financial advisor. Additionally, S & P reports can be helpful. You will stand a much better chance in the long run if you consult a professional. Picking stocks yourself is simply a recipe for disaster.

The best, and in many people's opinion, only way to pick long-term stocks is to buy into a well-diversified index fund that carries a broad market representation of all stocks. Individual stocks fluctuate a gigantic amount, but an index fund will correspond to the gains and losses of all equities.
