Ducks need niacin in their diet, therefore if a feedstore has a duck mash, that should be given to ducklings at a young age, brewer's yeast can be added to a chicken layer diet to provide proper diet to ducks. Reading labels on feed bags will help make decisions.

A diet similar to what ducks would eat in their natural habitat would ultimately provide the best form of nutrition. In the wild, ducks eat a wide variety of things such as; worms, small insects, snails, etc. They also eat natural seeds, grains, and vegetables.

Constant fresh water, for ducklings feed with 20-22% protein for the first 3-5 weeks. Adults need 14-16% protein, laying ducks 16-18% protein. You can consult your University Co-operative Extension Service for excellent advice. Remember, feed is only part of the effort- you need sufficient time, space and housing as well.
