Since pageants are usually somewhat formal affairs, it usually works well to wear the hair in an upsweep. Since we are speaking of a child, it would work best not to keep it too old fashioned or mature, so leave some front pieces falling on the face and make it young. It may work to use a "youthful" hair embellishment.

Winners of child beauty pageants typically have large curly extension wigs for their hair. You can pay hundreds of dollars for such wigs.

For little girls that are in pagents, you will want a hair style that makes them look older but not 20 years older. A cute updo will to the trick.

Your child can have a short hair which will look good on this age. Later when she grows up you can grow her hair long and lots of things can be done.

A look that has been popular in pageants since the beginning has been a simple yet elegent bun at the top of the head.

I would say keep it simple and appropriate for her age, there will be costume changes and so you want something that looks good with all the outfits, too.
