if you have 15-inch monitor then resolution should be 1024 × 768. 17- to 19-inch monitor then 1280 × 1024 & 20-inch and larger monitor 1600 × 1200.

The resolution depends on the size of your monitor as well as your preference. Majority prefer 1024x768. This will make webpages easily readable with minimal scrolling. Runner-up would be 1280x800.

For LCD/TFT monitors, usually the highest resolution is the only one that reproduces images properly. For the old CRT monitors, anything that you are comfortable with will work.
