Average rate of change is the differentiation of an algebric function with respect to time. Example: "ds/dt" is the average rate of change if "s" is a function of "t".

Average rate of change is discussed when talking about functions. It is the difference in outputs divided by the differences in inputs. As a formula, it is [f(x2) - f(x1)} / [x2 - x1]
