The per diem depends very much on the nature and purupose of the travel. Business people traveling to Paris to secure new clients for an international law firm likely have a much higher per diem than a salesman working his way through northern Indiana. For these reasons, it is unlikely that there is an "average" or a standard amount.

Generally per diem is provided in relation to your salary level. If it is all inclusive, i. e. it covers hotel, transportation, and food, it can be quite high up to $1000 per day. The average, without hotel or transportation, will generally be closer to $50-$100 depending on the location you are traveling to and the duration of the trip.

Per diems vary widely based on the business, but $30-60 per diem in addition to hotel and travel expenses is reasonable.

The average per diem is anywhere from $45-$150, it depends on the clients budget for the project. Other factors to consider are location of project, length of trip, industry the client is in, and urgency of the project. My experience is that public and government entities have a tight per diem budget, while private entities have a larger budget.
