It is a mineral. It is a pink to purple crystal-type mineral and is somewhat rare. It was first "discovered" in 1944 by a Japanese mineralologist by the name of Ken-Ichi Sugi (and thus the name). Sugilite can be rough or smooth. It usually is found in massive forms.
