Hair that stands up is usually caused by static electricity. After picking up extra electrons, it causes your hair to repel against each other. Because you hair is so tightly packed, the furthest any hair can get from another hair is to stand straight up.

it could be the way you are sleeping on it. try using a shower cap when you go to bed. if you fan your hair out on your pillow, it will cause the back and top of your hair to stick out.
