Ammonium acetate precipitation is very often used to separate proteins or DNA from dilute aqueous solutions. After precipitation, the precipitate is recolted through microcentrifugation. Other salts like sodium chloride or sodium acetate can be used. The choice is largely a matter of personal preference. The method is used in almost all the protocols for purification of nucleic acids.

Add 0.25 volumes of 10 molar ammonium acetate to your sample. Add 2 volumes of ice cold 100% ethanol, and spin at maximum speed. Wash with 70% ethanol.
