What is outlaw country?

A guy I know into that kind of music but I never heard of it.

It's country music that breaks the rules. It was mostly popular in the 60s-70s and included artists who refused to wear the glitzy, sequined suits, etc. Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willy Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., David Allen Coe, Waylon, Kristofferson, etc.

Outlaw country is a spinoff of country music. Country music carries a negative stigma with many people as being a bit on the sappy side. Outlaw counry is a little bit more rough around the edges.

Outlaw country is a type of country which was created in reaction to the typical, Nashville country sound. It stresses a break from the typical country style and an authentic flair.
