When used regarding fashion, "couture" is a shortening of the phrase "haute couture." This term originates from France. It generally means anything that is "high fashion." This includes high-end and expensive fashions by designer brands or clothing which is very fashionable, "fashion-forward" and of high quality.

The word is French and its original meaning is sewing. France has become a centre for high fashion and so its meaning extends nowadays to high profile design and modeling.
