It is a neutral base calcium carbonate that is naturally in limestone. When the quarries cut the limestone it leaves a dust. This dust is used in many products that we use today.

marble dust is a pure white calcite, and it's used in place of whiting in low-priced paste paint, because it's cheap, and absorbs less oil in grinding than whiting.

It is powder of calcium carbonate which is usually white. It is used by artists as an ingredient in their paints, especially white paints, or various kinds of plaster. Sometimes it is more coarsely ground and can be added to give a gritty texture to the surface of a work of art or fresco.
