a mathematical formula that calculates the value of an asset as it is used throughout its working lifespan. Determining the value of hard assets such as trucks, buildings, and equipment in correlation to their purchase price and time of use will yield their depreciation value. Thus linear depreciation is simply a set value that an asset loses each year.
