What is involved in winterizing banana plants?

I dig my banana's and put them in pots in the garage-which is also attached to the house. No extra light and I don't water them. When I dig them up I leave the soil on just because when I started with banana's I didn't know any better...but so far this works.

The first thing that you'll want to do is look up the specific type of banana plant that you have in order to find out what temperatures it can withstand. If it can handle the winter temperatures in your area, you'll want to keep it somewhere dark and dry in an effort to make the plant go dormant.

Do not fertilize shortly before frost. After frost bites the leaves, mulch the base well. Plant musu basjoo variety for best results. It is hardy into colder zones.

Depending on the climate, you must bring banana plants inside for the winter. IF you do not have space in the house, they will winter fine in the garage.

That all depends on what area you are in you should get a book on it the book will tell the different ways of doing it in different areas that way you won't lose your plants trying to figure it out on your own.

Well, to prepare them for winter, you may want to freeze them or keep them in cold temperatures to refrain from damage.

They are very tricky bring them in and make sure they are not close to a window where the pane gets cold I have double payned windows for mine.

Well if you want to winterize them , then you have to protect them from the cold temperatures. You should place some kind of green house over them so that they can grow in dry climates. If that does not work, then you should try freezing them and let them come out in the summer.
