What is involved in microvascular decompression surgery?

An incision will be made behind the ear. The skin and muscles are lifted off the bone and folded back. Then an opening is made in the occipital bone. The bone is then removed. Then the protective covering of the brain is cut then folded back. The tissue that is causing the compression is cut free and moved away.

Well basically, they are going to look at your vascular system and decompress the nerves and veins that are involved.

It is used to treat trigeminal neuralgia. Basically done under general anaesthesia and the loops of offending blood vessels that compress the trigeminal nerve are mobilised.

Anaesthesia is given; incision behind the ear, Tr. nerve found. Instruments are used to mobilize the vessels away from the Tr. nerve root maintained by inert implants.
