I've heard this term used, but I'm still unclear of exactly what the procedure entails.

Planing is the smoothing of the tooth root located below the gums. This allows the gum tissue to more firmly reattach to the roots since they are clean and smooth.

Gum planning is root planning. An ultrasonic tool is used for this. This is done to prevent gum disease from becoming too severe.
