Usually it refers to the concept of talking to a patient with the goal of uncovering unconscious thoughts and feelings so that they might be discussed by both the patient and therapist. The focus with Freudian psychology, as opposed to other approaches, is that Freud promoted the idea of tree separate parts of the self.
