This occurs when the same data is entered twice, usually by acident. Duplicate data can have severe consequenses for statistical analysis. If double data entry occurs for votes cast in an election, the losing party would have a good case to question the validity of the election. Likewise, validity of scientific findings is questionable if this occurs.

Double data entry is a quality assurance process. In double data entry instead of keying in information once, information is keyed in twice to ensure accuracy during data entry. A software can be used to perform double data entry or this double data entry can simply be done by the individual manually.
