Writers use descriptive writing to draw the reader into their story. The skillful use of colorful adjectives can paint a vivid picture of the characters, their motivations, and their surroundings. Most writers use sight, sound, taste, smell, touch and feelings to build interest, create drama, and grab the attention of their readers.

Descriptive writing is purely subjective and aids the reader in fully understanding what the author is trying to convey. Rather than giving facts by rote, descriptive writing reflects the author's opinion about a subject and may or may not be entirely accurate.

This type of writing uses simile and metaphor to help the reader create a visual picture of what's happening in the story.
