The pH range of your tank depends on the type of fish in it. Freshwater fish aqauriums can vary anywhere from 6. 8 to 7. 2 to possibly 7. 4. If it is a saltwater tank it is usually around 8. 2. Find out what kind of fish you have and go by that.

In a freshwater aquarium, the pH will constantly rise and fall, sometimes several times in a day. This is normal and perfectly fine just as long as the levels generally stay between a 5. 5 and an 8.0. The pH is very important and does need to be monitored to have healthy fish.

A high pH is greater than 7. 0, meaning the water is basic rather than acidic. All fish have different pH preferences. However, the pH should not be higher than 8.
