Those who have bi-polar disorder often cycle, sometimes quite rapidly, between being depressed to the point of being unable to function and being very energetic. The energetic side is often characterized by inability to sleep or focus. Self-destructive behavior can occur, as can psychotic episodes in extreme cases.

"Bi-polar" describes a personality that goes from one extreme to another. If your cousin has some periods of superhuman productivity and/or exuberance, and other periods of depression, withdrawal, and lethargy, that's "bi-polar". The condition isn't, by itself, necessarily a problem.

Bipolar depression means that a person's moods will swing from extreme highs (mania) to extreme lows (depression). Bipolar depression should be diagnosed and treated by a professional.
